Corridor 7 · recorded data

Türkiye Italy

Groupage road freight from Türkiye to Italy takes 12.2 days on average, calculated from 95 recorded shipments. That is close to double the 6.3 days we measure in the opposite direction on the same road. The distance is identical, so the difference is not the journey — it is the export side of the file.

The same road, twice the time

Our records hold 95 shipments from Türkiye to Italy, averaging 12.2 days. The inbound lane covers the identical distance in 6.3.

Two numbers, one road, a factor of two. Whatever explains it, it is not the driving.

Where the extra days come from

Two things, and both are administrative rather than physical.

The export step. An outbound consignment clears Turkish export formalities before it leaves. That is a stage the inbound direction does not have on this side of the route, and it is the point at which an incomplete file stops being a paperwork issue and starts being a waiting issue.

The volume imbalance. 8,511 recorded shipments run Italy to Türkiye; 95 run the other way. Groupage depends on vehicles filling, and a lane with a fraction of the volume fills more slowly. A consignment that misses one departure waits for the next.

Neither is fixed. Both are shortened the same way: by having the file complete before the goods reach the terminal.

What that means if you are exporting

Most of those 12.2 days are not spent on the road. They are spent waiting — for clearance, for a vehicle, for a document that was started too late. The practical lever is preparation: export declaration and A.TR certificate ready before collection, commodity code confirmed, value and origin details consistent across invoice and declaration.

Since 8 July 2024 the A.TR may be issued electronically with a QR code, so that document no longer has to travel physically with the consignment. Details in the customs guide.

The five Italian terminals work both ways

Milano, Vicenza, Torino, Bologna and Firenze are delivery points as well as collection points. An export consignment from Türkiye is distributed from the same network that consolidates the inbound freight — the infrastructure that makes the busy direction quick also serves the quieter one.

Process

How a shipment moves

Five steps from collection to delivery. Every status change is logged as a record — the transit times on this page are calculated from those records.

Frequently asked questions

How long does road freight from Türkiye to Italy take?

12.2 days on average, from 95 recorded shipments. The fastest took 3 days, the longest 26. For planning, work with 9 to 15 days.

Why is the export direction so much slower than the import direction?

The road is the same and the distance is the same, so neither explains it. What differs is the formalities and the flow. Export clearance in Türkiye adds a step that inbound consignments do not have on this side, and the volume balance matters too: 8,511 recorded shipments run Italy to Türkiye against 95 in the other direction, so an outbound consignment waits longer for a vehicle to fill.

Can the export direction be made faster?

The part that can be shortened is the waiting, and that is mostly about preparation. When the export declaration and the A.TR certificate are ready before the consignment reaches the terminal, it leaves with the next suitable vehicle instead of the one after. Most of the 12.2 days is not driving.

Which documents does an export from Türkiye to Italy need?

The commercial invoice, packing list, transport document and the Turkish export declaration, plus an A.TR movement certificate for goods in free circulation under the EU–Türkiye customs union. Product-specific permits may apply on top, depending on the commodity code.

Do you handle the export customs formalities?

Yes. General Gümrük Müş. Ltd. is the customs brokerage in our group and prepares the declaration from the same shipment file the transport side works from. On the export leg that matters more than on the inbound one, because the clearance step is where the days accumulate.

means the fastest recorded value on that lane is not plausible as a transit time (a shipment booked out on the day it was collected). We leave it out rather than publish a figure we cannot stand behind. The average and the slowest value are unaffected.
